Right Stretcher Bar for Your Painting

Although it may be common knowledge that a wood stretcher bar should have a good radius on the top, it may not be as obvious to some that the bottom of the stretcher bar should also have a “slight” radius. To ensure the tightest possible stretch select a wood stretcher bar that has a radius on both the top and bottom.

The best analogy I can think of when describing the effects of stretching canvas is to imagine “pulling” a heavy weight across a sheet of plywood on a narrow strip of cotton-backed canvas. Imagine how it would be to pull a 50 pound weight on the same plane as the surface it is setting on. It would take slightly more than 50 pounds to move this object. Now imagine pulling this weight across the edge of the plywood at a 90 degree angle, across its hard edge with no radius. It would require even more force to move this same object. Now imagine pulling the canvas across both edges in the opposite direction, 180 degrees away from the direction the object is moving. There is a good chance that it may not move at all.

This same process would yield much better results if both of the “edges” were rounded-over. This “radius” reduces the drag and allows the object to move with considerably less force. Stretching canvas across a wood stretcher bar is no different, especially when trying to produce a “gallery wrap”. Without a good radius the canvas is not able to be pulled effectively across a hard angle, reduce this angle and you will produce a tighter stretch.

Sell your art by making prints

Have you ever thought of making money by selling prints of your art? Once you have made a wonderful painting and have sold it, you can go on forever and sell that same image over and over. The key to doing this is to have a quality print to begin with. You also have to photograph the art piece of course before you sell it. If the art is small enough you can put it on a scanner and scan the picture of at least 350 dpi or higher. If the artwork is a canvas painting or large piece of art on paper you will have to take a high quality photo of it. One you have the image on your computer be sure to make a back up file of the image somewhere besides on your hard drive. I use an external drive (getting full by the minute) or I use the Google cloud.

Learning to Draw – Your First Few Sessions

You should be drawing, say, three days a week in order to build on what we’re talking about. Learning to draw is like eating an elephant – do it a bit at a time. I’m starting you from a very simple place, of drawing exactly what’s in front of you. Do it exactly the same size on a piece of paper sat along side you’re still life. I suggest you do this half a dozen times. Each time for about half an hour may be a little bit longer if your concentration span can take it. You can draw the same object time and time again from a different viewpoint.

For these first few drawings just concentrate on the outline and concentrate on comparing the position of each outline and its relationship to any nearby outlines. Look at the space in between the outlines, try and compare these. Is this space bigger than it should be? Is in the right position in relation to its neighbours?

You can as you get a bit of confidence play with the kind of line you use. I suggest that you start off with a relatively soft pencil rehearse the line without allowing the pencil to touch the paper when you feel that your arm is moving correctly and the point of a pencil is over the right area you can lower the pencil onto the paper and make the mark. do this all always as your arm is moving, this will make the mark seemed fresher and more spontaneous. Avoid being tense and tight, your state of mind should be relaxed concentration.

As you get more confidence you can use a different medium. Try using a different kind of pencil, try using charcoal, and if you’re really feeling good try using a pen. A simple ballpoint pen is a great tool but the pen has the benefit of not being easily erased, so it makes you really focus and concentrate. This alone gives a different kind of drawing.

When you have really got the hang of this try doing a drawing of the same still life but doing a reduction in size. Still have a paper on the easel but do the same thing this time not life-size but reduced in size. Do this three or four times, if that works well try enlarging the image.

If you are not new to drawing you already know that the real fun begins when you start drawing characters. Drawing props can be interesting but that is no match to character drawing. And drawing cartoon characters can be even more interesting.

But let me tell you at the outset, character drawing is more fun because it is more challenging. You need to have right techniques in your bag. Apart from that you will need to practice a lot before you start making decent cartoon characters.

Your cartoon characters need not be human: an animal or even inanimate objects can represent a character. I am sure you are aware of Mickey Mouse or Tom and Jerry.

To be successful in character drawing you need to keep in mind the difference between a prop and a character. In one line it can be said that a character normally communicates something to the viewer through facial expression, gesture or body language, whereas a prop just remains there in the scene.

So your main task as a character artist is to let your creation communicate with the watcher. You will need to learn the basics of expression. Fortunately the fundamentals of drawing expressive characters are same no matter if your character is a man, a cat or a tree.

Be a close watcher of people around you and note how their facial muscles react to various emotions. Pay special attention to eyes, eye brows and mouth as these are the areas that play major part in forming various expressions.

Also be a keen watcher of body language and try to implement your findings in your drawing where appropriate.

There may be times when facial expression or body language may not be sufficient for your character to express itself. For such situations you can represent your characters speech or thought using speech balloon or thought bubbles as you can find in various comic books.

If your character is in motion you can use motion lines to represent that. Trailing straight lines can not only show if the motion is slow or fast it can also show the direction of the motion.

Proper use of shadows is also very important. The shadows can show the time of the day, weather [sharp shadow will mean a sunny day, dim shadow will mean a not so sunny day].

Detailed shadow will take lot of drawing effort, if you do not want to spend much time for drawing shadow you can use small patches to represent shadow which is much better than using no shadow at all in your creation.

Use right kind of props to compose your scene. The props can set the mood of the scene. So be selective about the props. The right types of props can add to the expressiveness of your character.

This may sound like a lot of work and believe me it is. But the satisfaction that you will have by making beautiful and expressive cartoon characters will outweigh the work that you will put into it.
