Artist Resource ~ Freeze Frames
by S. Pimental I love old vintage color cartoons. The colors are rich and the quality of the drawings are so detailed and creative. Beautiful scenery such as the landscapes are the best part watching the vintage cartoon shorts. Watch them on YouTube and pause when you come to a scene you like. The trick is to watch the film and then go back and freeze frame to capture the scene. Use the PrtScn button on your computer, then right click your mouse to paste in an editing program. See the examples on the left from an old cartoon from the 1930's. I saved the image and then I outlined the picture to capture the lines I may want to use for future reference. This exercise in using old freeze frame art from cartoons only purpose is to guide you into the inner creativity of your mind and tweak an image you see and take it to the next dimension. The image of the moon and trees on the left is a study in which I can paint a picture from and in my mind I see: snow covered hills and and a snowman and perhaps a child sliding down the hill on a sled. Another possible scenario would be: changing the church into a haunted house and in the moonlight plant a few gravestones and black cat just for fun.
